Magnificent Pair of Meissen Snowball Porcelain Covered Vases, Marked

About the Item

Magnificent pair of Meissen covered vases, decorated with snowball porcelain effect, with winged parrot on top of each cover, above branches, leaves, and berries. The entire surface of each vase is decorated with snowball porcelain effect. Different three dimensional colorful birds and leafy branches are set around each vase, the birds seeming to have landed on the vase. The type of vase is described as ‘Schneeballen’ or snow ball vase. They were first made in 1741. Each vase has hundreds of flower, 'snowballs’ which were hand modeled and individually applied. This style was also particularly astonishing given that firing porcelain was incredibly difficult.

  • Fine Pair of 18th Century Chinese Craqule Vases with Bronze Mounts
    Located in New Orleans, LA
A magnificent pair of early 18th century Chinese celadon craqule ware vases. When they were exported to France in the 19th century, the French added bronze d’ore mounts. Here we see tops, side handles, and bases of bronze d’ore, crafted beautifully in the Rococo manner. This piece is a collection of a fourth generation, family owned business in New Orleans called The French Antique Shop. The store was first opened by Marie and Marcel Granet in Paris when they married in 1927. A jewish family, they came to the United States before the outbreak of the Second World War, leaving on the last boat out of Paris' port, Le Havre. When they reached New Orleans, they fell in love with the Vieux Carre...

This pair of vases is made of exceptionally fine Porcelaine de Paris from the 18th century. The bronze mounts are covered in gold, and were 19th century additions. The porcelain itself is a phenomenal blue color with gold designs on it that looks magnificent. The vases each have a set of four portraits on them as well: two horizontal scenes on the front and back, with two vertical portraits above them on the front and back as well. The paintings on the front of each have people in them, whereas the ones on the back depict country scenes and buildings. The inscription under the lid of the vase reads "Offert par Le Duc de Richelieu a la Princess de Lomballe." The Duke of Richelieu who gave these vases was most likely Louis François Armand de...
