Mark V. Marshall Doulton Lambeth Art Nouveau/Gothic Revival Vase

About the Item

An impressive, large Doulton Lambeth vase made ca. 1885-1900 by Mark V. Marshall, assisted by Florrie Jones. Mark V. Marshall’s vase fuses and contrasts Medieval Gothic art with Belle Epoque Art Nouveau design. The 19th-century Gothic Revival movement sought to correct the decline of social standards and morals by introducing into design the characteristics found in Gothic Christian art, seen here in the coiling dragons around the neck. The body, taking after the Belle Epoque Art Nouveau movement, heralds “art for art’s sake,” valuing aesthetics over materials and creating a sumptuous and precious exterior more akin to a polished gemstone. The base has the impressed lion and crown stamp, impressed number '6264' and printed 'ART UNION OF LONDON.' Marshall's signature is incised 'MVM' on a dragon on the body of the vase. Florrie Jones's initials FJ are incised on the base. Condition: Excellent. Dimensions: 16 1/2 in. H x 6 1/4 in. Dm (42 cm H x 15.9 cm Dm).
