Olle Alberius Orrefors Exhibition Vase Signed Numbered 1973 Acid Yellow Cobalt

About the Item

An Orrefors Art Glass crystal vase, signed ‘Orrefors Expo A 253-73 Olle Alberius’ (Olle Alberius, 1973). We love the wild colours combined in this vase, the punchy Op Art effect and the very thick walls, which allow the blue line to float and even cast shadows onto the acid yellow interior of the vase. Visually powerful and very expressive of the late 1960s and early 1970s when shape and colour were unleashed and the boundaries of design exploded. Similarly trippy vibes are found in the work of Verner Panton and Joe Colombo. This is an exhibition piece by Alberius. It weighs over 7 pounds (3.2 kg). The 'Expo' items from Orrefors were of limited edition. They are not unique, but a complete signature on an Expo item is Orrefors + EXPO + the initial or initials of the designer + number + year. The first Expo-signed item by Olle Alberius is numbered 200-72. (Ref: Kerstin Wickman ed., 1998, Orrefors: Etthundra år av svensk glaskonst, Stockholm: Byggförlaget-Kultur).

  • Monumental Signed Shunichi Inoue White and Rose Ash Glazed Vase 1978
    By Shunichi Inoue
    Located in Melbourne, AU
A wonderful example of the work of master Japanese potter, Shunichi Inoue. This vessel dates from his Australian residency. We love the potency of this very simple form - it has a powerful presence, connoting stillness, composure. For some reason it makes me think of the moon. It has the same still, calm, abiding presence. Shunichi Inoue studied ceramics at Kyoto City University of Arts 1969-75. He travelled to Australia to lecturer in ceramics at the Bendigo College of Advanced Education in Victoria, Australia where he stayed for three years. He returned to Australia in late 1984 as a visiting professor and again in 1993, when he made an extended stay. He was an active exhibitor and had an important influence on Australian pottery...

  • Merletto Glass Vase with Ground Lip, style of Harrachov Czech
    By Harrach Glassworks
    Located in Melbourne, AU
This may not be a vase by the Czech company Harrach, hence listed ‘in the style of’. Nevertheless, it has a strong central European 1950s aesthetic. We love to connect the objects we find to the social movements of their time. This vase was made in the 1950s - the atomic age. You can see the inclination towards science - experimental materials and technology, accuracy and super fine detail in the 'Merlatto' (lace) glass treatment of this vase. The Merletto pattern inside the glass is unlike the triple-threaded Czech version. It looks more like the earlier Seguso Merletto...
