Pair of Italian Faience Covered Vases of Baluster Form with Charming Scenes
About the Item
A matching pair of 19th century Italian faience covered vases of flattened baluster form, hand-painted with figures from the Commedia dell'arte. The main body of each piece features a scene with naively painted figures in landscapes on a white background. Framed by two frail trees, a bear tamer, his assistant and a monkey adorn the first one and a couple of musicians the other, their gaily colored costumes and theatrical gestures echoing the Commedia dell’arte. This popular form of theatre emerged in Europe during the Renaissance and remained popular especially during the 18th century under the influence of the French painter Watteau. Each piece is surmounted by a conical cover decorated with delicate flower sprigs and topped by an original foliate scrolling knop, symmetrically responding to the other when the vases are placed beside one another.
The thin ochre lining on the base, cover and knop underlining the elegant baluster shape of both vases, along with the charming hand-painted scenes reminiscent of the Commedia dell’arte, would make this matching pair of 19th century Italian faience vases a pleasant addition to any traditional home.
