Pair of Ormolu-Mounted Theodore Deck Faience Persian-Blue Vases with Lampshades

About the Item

A pair of late 19th century ormolu-mounted faience Persian-blue vases by Theodore Deck, mounted as oil lamps. As in traditional Persian design, the lamps are bottle-shaped, with a wide rounded body leading to a long and slender neck. Each piece is decorated in relief under a deep-blue glaze with Persian and Chinese style foliate decorations, the body molded with scrolling lotus and the neck with overlapping stylized leaves. They are mounted onto round chased ormolu bases, with ormolu oil lamp fittings topped by a small plate with the Chinese character Fu or Happiness, within white tapered lampshades adorned with gilt friezes. Théodore Deck, one of the most esteemed French ceramist of the late 19th century, was famous for this rich turquoise ‘’Deck-blue’’ glaze, symbolizing the semi-precious mineral lapis lazuli. This pair or ormolu-mounted faience Persian-blue vases in the Orientalist style could add a touch of color and exoticism to any home.
