About the Item

Based on ancient Middle Eastern hand-building and glazing technique, this stoneware jar is designed as a floor lamp base, with wiring holes built in. With minimal ingenuity the wiring holes can be stopped up and it can be used as a vase. It can be presented simply as an impressive object in it's own right. It can be wired and lit if desired. It appeals to anyone interested in Organic Modern style, ancient pottery or the Brutalist aesthetic of the 1970s. It was purchased in the late 1960s or early 1970s from Israel by a dedicated collector of ceramics, and shipped to Australia. It's been in a single family collection ever since. We love the impressive scale, ancient form, deep texture and organic colouring of this vase/lamp. It will set off a Brutalist interior, sit comfortably in a Mid-Century Modern interior or settle in beautifully to a minimalist interior where some Organic Modern detail is needed for texture and warmth. Super-versatile and brings its own organic, living presence. Just wonderful. In both the West and the Middle East in the 1970s, ceramic artists closely studied archeology and ethnography. They were interested in returning to the ancient roots of pottery via the essentials - hand building, understanding clays and earthenware, basic firing techniques and ancient natural glazes. This is particularly true for Israeli potters, many of them women, who were exploring ancient Middle Eastern techniques and traditions, styles and forms. This floor lamp originates from that time and place - an attempt to bring back ancient traditions but with a modern eye.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Tiny chips here and there. They are of little to no consequence on this vessels beautifully complex surface. In great condition and ready to wire or to use as a vase or object.
