About the Item

A fine and impressive antique George II sterling silver mug made by John Langlands I; an addition to our range of Georgian silverware collection This fine antique George II solid silver pint mug has a plain baluster shaped form onto a circular domed spreading foot. The surface of this Georgian mug in sterling silver is embellished with exceptional later chased shaped panel of floral, foliate and grape cluster ornamentation. The body is further encompassed with scroll designs and structural columns, in addition to a tavern style character lounging and smoking a pipe. The decoration to the body incorporates a scroll bordered catouche displaying a bright cut engraved jockey and horse design. The upper rim of the body is encircled with an applied moulded border. This antique silver mug is fitted with an impressive S scroll handle incorporating a plain thumbpiece; the handle is struck with the maker's mark as to be expected. The foot of this impressive example of Georgian silverware is encircled with an undulating band of chased leaf textures. This pint mug was crafted by the renowned Newcastle silversmith John Langlands I. Condition: This antique Georgian mug in sterling silver is a very good gauge of silver for its type, exceptional quality and in excellent condition in keeping with age. There is some minor bruising to the handle, in keeping with age and use. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the mug are all clear. The maker's mark to the handle has wear in keeping with age and location.
