French Early 20th Century Figural Butcher's Cleaver in the Form of a Bird

About the Item

An early 20th century French figural butcher's cleaver in the form of a bird. The bird looks back over its shoulder at the chef holding the handle of the cleaver. Perhaps considering what may happen next. The metal blade is formed and shaped, retaining some of its sharpness, so please be careful. The handle is solid. The work is an exercise in the understanding of positive and negative space, the cleaver and the bird are joined as one, yet can be appreciated independently of one another. It has lived a life which is an interesting statement for a tool of this type. The bird has taken a knock or two and there may be a chunk missing from its head. Perhaps an unskilled apprentice snuck up to the butcher block and mishandled the tool, dropping it onto the floor many, many years ago. Oh, only if these items could speak. Or crow. Or cluck.
