18th Century Caughley Spoon Tray Porcelain Fisherman Pattern, circa 1780

About the Item

This is an excellent example of a porcelain Spoon Tray made by the Caughley factory, Shropshire, England. The Spoon Tray is made of porcelain and is vertically fluted with a wavy rim. It is decorated in the distinctive transfer printed cobalt blue pattern called "Fisherman", all consistent with the chinoiserie influence of the time. There is also a nice border border pattern to the inner rim. Similar pieces are illustrated on Plate 180, 181 and 195 of the book; Caughley & Worcester Porcelains 1775-1800 by Geoffrey A Godden. The base is clearly marked with the underglaze blue printed Salopian "S" which is a recorded Caughley mark for the period 1775 to 1790.
