Art Nouveau Majolica Oval Asparagus Dish Manufactured by Orchies France
About the Item
This 19th century Majolica asparagus hand-painted plate was made in France. Decorated in the middle with asparagus in barbotine - slip with yellow shell pattern on the lip and art nouveau style blue border. Marked 5 on the back. Work of the faïencerie d'Orchies.
The french earthenware Manufacture d’Orchies was created in 1879 by L’Herminé near the Belgia border where many other earthenware firms were established since the 18th century,. The Manufacture d’Orchies created many decorative pieces enhanced with vivid colors. The firm was absorbed by Moulin-des-Loups Hamage in 1923 and despite a rebound in the 1950s, the company definitively closed its doors in the 1980s.
Plate reproduced in Maryse Botero, Artichauts et Asperges en barbotine, Paris, Massin, Paris, p.100.
