Unique Midcentury - Modern Ceramic Vase, Erik Pløen, Norway 1960s

About the Item

Erik Pløen was one of the leading figures in modern Norwegian ceramics. He had an exceptionally varied artistry where he constantly experimented with new forms and glazes. Pløen's work is primarily characterized by a great sculptural understanding. He started as an apprentice in 1942 with Schneider and Knutzen at Slemdal in Oslo. After the war, he traveled to Royal Copenhagen in Copenhagen and the University of Chicago, among other places. Pløen got his own workshop in Asker in 1946. Later he moved to Stange (1948 – 1957). After some time at Ljan, where he was the first in the country to install a gas kiln for firing ceramics (1964), he moved to Son in Vestby, where he stayed and worked for the rest of his life. He eventually developed a personal style, where thickness, glaze and texture together made the work a personal expression.
