About the Item

This large fruit bowl comes elevated on its own pedestal of leaves featuring a large melon wedge in the center of an arrangement of brightly colored fruits and grapes. Katherine Houston is a living artist working in an 18th century technique, adapting the techniques and masterful creations of the past with a 21st century approach to design and technicality. She is one of the few artists in the world carrying on a tradition of hand sculpting hard paste porcelain, decorated with a broad range of color over glazes. Ms. Houston is directly influenced by ancient Imperial and Chinese wares and those of 18th century Meissen and Sevres. Her work is predominantly botanical themes fruits, vegetables, leaves and flowers. Her painstaking attention to detail, her devotion to the exploration of color and depth of palette, and her earthy yet elegant designs have established her as a preeminent artist in the field. Ms. Houston has lectured and demonstrated her technique around the country in numerous museums and associations: Bayou Bend, Houston, TX, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, RISDI, Providence, RI, Museum of Art, Kalamazoo, MI and Charlotte, NC, Hartford Athenaeum, Hartford, CT, Peabody Essex, Salem, MA, Philadelphia Garden Show in PA and many others. She has regularly exhibited at the New York Ceramics Fair, the Palm Beach Art and Antiques Show, the Baltimore Art and Antique Show, and also in Greenwich, CT, Winterthur, DE and Philadelphia, PA. The decorative porcelain art work of Katherine Houston is collected throughout the United States, in Europe, South America, and Japan. Her work can be seen at the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut, which houses an internationally acclaimed porcelain collection. Ms. Houston has been commissioned by The White House to create an exclusive work of art an authentic ‘American Pumpkin’ to be used as State Department gifts. She has been represented at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Gumps, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Scully and Scully.
