Italian, Late 18th Century Watch Holder with Father Time

About the Item

Italian, late 18th century watch holder with Father Time. The robed figure of Father Time is standing on a raised plinth with rocks and a koi fish or carp. He is holding a shield and standing next to the watch opening, his arm is holding a floral filled vase. This "Pocket Watch Holder" would have been prominently displayed on a gentleman's desk or nightstand. At night gentleman usually hung their pocket watches on special stands. Because the face was raised and visible, this had the effect of converting the pocket watch into a clock. Watch holders were made of many materials, including wood, china, metal, and bone. The Staffordshire factories made a variety of holders in bright colors and shapes. A development of these was the larger Stand which had a recess for a small clock with a watch like face. A pocket watch holder was indispensable to the wealthy and was always placed close at hand. The watch holder also served a second purpose as early watches were most accurate when they were held in a vertical position. The pocket watch shown in the photo is not included. N. P. Trent Antiques has been a respected name in antiques for over 30 years with a large collection of period furniture, art, books, jewelry and decorative accessories.
