Joint sale of three item by the famous designer Josef Ekberg at Gustavsberg

About the Item

Josef Alfred Ekberg, born February 18, 1877 in Värmdö parish, Stockholm county, died December 7, 1945 in Gustavsberg parish, Stockholm county, was a Swedish ceramist and designer at the Gustavsberg porcelain factory. He was artistic director 1908–1917 and developed the sgraffito technique. Ekberg started his work at the Gustavsberg porcelain factory as 12-year-old. His incredible sense of color and form meant that he advanced from assistant to decorator and then had to paint the motifs. He worked together with Gunnar Wennerberg and developed a special sgraffito technique that was featured at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. He was appointed and became artistic director early in 1908. Wilhelm Kåge was appointed as his successor in 1917. He continued his work at the factory until his death and worked mainly with refractory goods. Ekberg is represented at, among others, the Hallwylska museum and the National Museum in Stockholm. The three objects in question span the period between 1913 and 1925. This was a very productive time and the Jugend style was in full bloom. The current objects can be described as follows, from 1913 - 1925 with a clear change over time. The larger one (32/19 cm high/wide) has a more sculpted character, while the other two (1921 - 28/13 cm and 1925 - 19/10 cm) have received a much softer expression in both form and figures. Together they form both a story and a fantastic community in the room they stand in. It is easy to fall into the mystique of the 1910s and 20s and the Swedish match king Ivar Kruger's progress across Europe.
