M.A. Hadley Pottery Signed Hand Painted Tea Cup Saucer Set Mid Century Country

About the Item

Tea or cappuccino cup and saucer were handmade by Hadley Pottery in Louisville, Kentucky. It is hand painted in minimal palette of green and pink with stylized plant and fruit designs done in thick glaze on off-white background and accented with substantial pink rim. Inside the cup is decorated with THE END written on the bottom, to be seen after the beverage is finished. It is an earlier piece of Hadley Pottery's work, done in more abstract, but still easily recognizable style. It is signed on the bottom of both cup and saucer. Hadley Pottery was founded by Mary Alice Hadley, a self-taught artist and trained ceramicist, in 1940s. Her designs found their prominence in the mid-century; she was invited to exhibit in America House in NYC in 1947, and in 1952 she was awarded a Good Design Award by MOMA. Her work is featured in permanent collections of Smithsonian, MOMA, Speed Art Museum, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. After Hadley passed away in 1965, the pottery was run by her husband George until his retirement in 1979, when it was sold to Day family who worked at Hadley for generations. Hudley's original designs and her signature continued to be used by pottery artisans. The cup measures 2.25" high with 3.15" diameter opening, and the saucer measures 5.75" in diameter. The set is in excellent vintage condition.
