Mason's Ironstone Tea Cup Hand Painted in Gilded Water Lily Pattern, circa 1835
About the Item
This is a beautiful, early Tea Cup in the highly collected Water Lily pattern, made by Mason's Ironstone, England, circa 1835.
This cup has one of the highly decorative and sought after oriental, chinoiserie patterns called " Water Lily", as documented on page 136 of A Guide to Mason's Patent ironstone patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Masons Collectors' Club. The pattern is finely hand painted inside and outside, in bold enamels over a printed under-glaze blue outline with additional gilded highlighting, particularly to the handle which has a dark Mazarine blue ground.
The base of the cup is unmarked but it is definitely by Mason's and a very similar cup in a different pattern is shown on Page 140 of the book; A Compendium of British Cups" by Michael Berthoud, Plate 836.
Overall a beautiful example of Mason's Ironstone nearly 200 years old!
