Rickard Collection Mochaware Mug w/ Oak Leaf & Wavy Line Decoration

About the Item

Provenance: The Rickard Collection (a paper label on the bottom of the mug notes that the tankard is part of the "Rickard Collection." Jonathan Rickard is a renowned collector of mochaware, and the author of "Mocha and related dipped wares." We are pleased to offer this mochaware mug with rare oak leaf and wavy line decoration made in England circa 1830. Thin double bands of midnight brown slip separate wide horizontal bands of taupe and light blue slip. The taupe band is decorated with a white slip wavy line, and the bright blue band is decorated with a white slip twig design. The curved line and oak leaf design slip was applied through a quill while the mug was turned on the lathe. Dimensions: height 5." Condition: Good, with some invisible restoration to the side of the mug Price: $ 470 Background of Mochaware: Mocha-decorated pottery is a type of slip-decorated, lathe-turned earthenware with colored slip bands on white or buff-colored bodies.     Made in England circa 1815 this mochaware pitcher is decorated with bands of lovely milk chocolate-colored slip. The color works beautifully with the unpainted creamware body of the handle and interior of the pitcher. Just below the top edge, we see a band of black and white rouletting, and above the bottom edge is a similar black and white rouletted band.
