SIX Georgian Hicks & Meigh Ironstone Dinner Plates Water Lily Ptn No.5, Ca 1815

About the Item

This is a very good set of six large dinner plates in the Water Lily pattern, made by Hicks and Meigh of Shelton, Staffordshire, England between 1812 and 1822, probably circa 1815. These are very beautiful large circular dinner plates with a shaped notched edge to the rim. All plates have been well hand painted in bold enamels over a lightly printed outline in the very beautiful and well collected "Water Lily" pattern (their pattern no.5) which was also used by Mason's Ironstone and looks virtually identical. The plates have a printed circular mark in under-glaze blue to the base stating Ironstone Warranted around a Crown with No 5 below it. This is a recognized mark used by Hicks and Meigh and is recorded and illustrated on Page 253 of Geoffrey Godden's Guide to Ironstone and Granite Wares, published by The Antique Collectors' Club. Pieces in the same pattern and shape are illustrated on Page 254 of the same book. Overall a very beautiful Georgian set of Six large Dinner Plates in the sought after Water Lily pattern and over 200 years old!!

Set of six majolica charger plates is handmade and hand-painted in Italy following the original Renaissance painting technique, unchanged over time, which we observe to the letter. The elegant decoration is composed of a halo of blue foliage that resembles four groups of wings: from the center of the plate, further ornamental elements develop, projected outwards, which give movement to the entire compositional structure. The beauty of these majolica plates is underlined by the artist's visible brushstrokes that give them a unique style. Further possibility to order a set of 4 or 12 charger...
