Antique Coromandel Three Crystal Decanter Tantalus & Games Drawer 19th C
Located in London, GB
This is a superb antique Victorian coromandel, brass mounted and cased three decanter tantalus and games compendium, Circa 1880 in date.
It was skillfully crafted in rare coromandel with cut brass mounts, three cut crystal glass decanters with stoppers, a mirrored back and a twin lidded compartment with a Bramah lock, opening to reveal a compartment containing five glasses.
There is a secret base drawer with playing cards, cribbage board, dice and chips. It can be opened by pressing the disguised brass button which is just in front of the central decanter.
It is a decorative piece which is also very practical, and would make a lovely gift.
It is complete with the original working Bramah lock and key, which locks everything.
Condition:
In excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned polished and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation.
Dimensions in cm:
Height 33 cm x Width 38 cm x Depth 11 cm
Dimensions in inches:
Height 1 foot, 1 inch x Width 1 foot, 3 inches x Depth 4 inches
Coromandel wood or Calamander wood
is a valuable wood from India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It is of a hazel-brown color, with black stripes (or the other way about), very heavy and hard. It is also known as Macassar Ebony or variegated ebony and is closely related to genuine ebony, but is obtained from different species in the same genus; one of these is Diospyros quaesita Thwaites, from Sri Lanka. The name Calamander comes from the local sinhalese name, 'kalu-medhiriya', which means dark chamber; referring to the characteristic ebony black wood.
Coromandel wood has been logged to extinction over the last 2 to 3 hundred years and is no longer available for new work in any quantity. Furniture in coromandel is so expensive and so well looked after that even recycling it is an unlikely source. A substitute, Macassar Ebony, has similar characteristics and to the untrained eye is nearly the same but it lacks the depth of colour seen in genuine Coromandel.
Bramah
is London's oldest security company. Established at 124 Piccadilly, London in 1784, and today based in Marylebone, London and Romford, Essex.
Bramah made their first lock in 1784 and the patent was awarded in 1787. The designer was Joseph Bramah. Joseph Bramah was a leading inventor of the industrial revolution, patenting over 18 new ideas, including a new valve for the water closet (toilet), the hydraulic pump, a fountain pen, and a fire engine.
Bramah also introduced a beer hand pump for use at the bar, to prevent fluid loss when barmen went downstairs to pour a new jug! Due to the quality of his manufacturing, his name became a by-word amongst British Engineers for engineering excellence and many of his inventions are on display in the Science Museum in London. You can find one of his original toilets still working in Osborne House, Queen Victoria's home on the Isle of Wight.
The Bramah lock was unique and advanced property and valuables protection enormously. Indeed it was 50 years ahead of any Chubb lock...

Antique Baccarat Crystal Empire Armorial Crest 34 Piece Stemware Service for 8
By Baccarat
Located in New York, NY
Historically significant Baccarat Empire Simson Armorial Crest stemware service for 8 - champagne, wine, water and liqueur glasses and two superb wine decanters, each piece bearing the Simson crest
19th Century
The Armorial crest is almost certainly that of Sampson Simson (1780-1857), a Jewish American philanthropist most notably remembered as the Father of Mount Sinai Hospital. Simson was born in Danbury, CT and expressed an early interest in law, attending Columbia University where he studied under Aaron Burr. He was admitted to the bar in 1802 and became one of the first Jewish lawyers in New York City. He retired several years later to devote himself to charitable work. In 1852, nine men, including Sampson Simpson, joined together to establish the Jew's Hospital in New York which later became Mount Sinai Hospital. Simson served as the first president of the hospital's Board of Directors, personally covering many of the expenses and donating the land upon which the hospital was originally built on West 28th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues.
Baccarat introduced their iconic Harcourt pattern in 1841 and this service is from approximately the same time period, circa 1850. The Baccarat Empire pattern elevates the Harcourt design model with fine gilded decoration identical at the foot and rim to the Simson service. Armorial crests were executed by special commission which included the 1828 Louis de Bourbon Ewer, the Duke of Aosta service, Service de L'Elysee, Countess of Paris Service and those of other prominent individuals.
The service includes:
Wine decanter with handle: 10.5 inches high, 5.5 inches diameter
Wine Decanter: 10.38 inches high, 5 inches diameter
8 champagne coupes: 5 inches high, 4 inches diameter
8 wine glasses: 5 inches high, 2.63 inches diameter
8 water glasses: 6.63 inches high, 3.57 inches diameter
8 liqueur glasses: 4.13 inches high, 2.13 inches diameter
Condition: Very Good. very light age appropriate surface wear
Baccarat registered its trademark in 1860 at which time a paper label began to be attached to pieces, very few of these labels have survived. Prior to this period, Baccarat pieces were unsigned, with the exception of some early paperweights bearing the letter B. Early Baccarat is identified by quality, pattern and references.
References: Christie's, Auction 2814, January 23, 2014 for a silver brandy warmer by Myer Myers with an identical crest, the lot essay identifying the crest as that of Sampson Simson
_ we are grateful to Jill Waddell, Christie's VP, Senior Specialist, Silver Department for her assistance with identifying the Simson crest.

Striking Oak & Brass Tantalus with Whiskey or Liqueur Crystal Decanters & Drawer
Located in Lisse, NL
Large size and great design, antique tantalus.
This wonderful condition and rare, three crystal bottles holding, tiger oak tantalus will look great everywhere. This handcrafted work of beauty dates from the late 1800s and it comes with a variety of striking details and compartments. The two folding lids come with beautifully silvered brass hinges and the lock works perfectly via the original key. It is only when you have opened the lids that you can press the silvered button in the middle (it is on a stick) to open the secret drawer below. In the back of the secret drawer is a game that we have never seen before (see image 11) and we don't know if it is complete. The secret drawer can also be used to keep decks of cards and alike. Also, only when the lids are open, will you be able to take out the bottles as well. For those who did not yet know, these striking 'minibars' with lock and key were created so that the butler or maid or any other non-family member could not secretly drink the very expensive liquids that these decanters would have held. The crystal decanters and stoppers...
