Barovier Toso Italian Vintage Art Glass Rostrato Murano Vase / Bowl, circa 1938

About the Item

Barovier Toso Italian vintage art glass Rostrato Murano vase / bowl, circa 1938 An exquisite mid-20th century centrepiece by Barovier & Toso in blown Murano Art glass with Art Deco flair, hand decorated with the technique Rostrato: spikes of glass individually hand pulled in relief. Rostrato is a distinctive technique invented by Ercole Barovier as a way to enhance the glass luminosity while multiplying light reflections. The organic shape of this centrepiece is particularly interesting so that it can be used as a bowl and as a flower vase. During the 1930s, with their 'Rostrato' series, designed by Ercole Barovier (1938-1940), Ferro Toso e Barovier introduced modern free forms by applying pieces of glass to the moulten surface of vases, bowls, perfume bottles, etc., adding 'bollicine' (bubbles) to produce a decorative effect without resorting to color. However after 1942, when the company was renamed Barovier & Toso, it continued to produce more conventional forms.
