Bohemian Loetz Art Deco Cobalt Papillon Footed Glass Vase c1920

About the Item

A fabulous Art Deco Cobalt (blue/gold on blue) Papillon (Butterfly wing) footed vase. This iridised finish was first created by Loetz in 1898, but the pattern was revised in the early 1920s when more complex shapes like this example were created (the vase is made up of three hot fused parts). Papillon was made in candia, crete, cobalt, dark blue, opal, orange, ruby or yellow ground, each marvered with silvery-yellow (oil spot) granules. The vibrant cobalt blue colouring, as in this example, is one of the most pleasing colours. Loetz was and still is probably the most famous and most collected of the great Bohemian glass makers.
