Fine Pair of Early George III Cast Sugar Tongs by Charles Hougham

About the Item

The tongs have elegantly shaped and pierced arms, with horizontal pails, and an unusual feather edge border. The arms terminate in shell grips, flanked by scrolls and the arched top is unusually engraved with stylized vines and bunches of grapes. The arch is also engraved with a set of contemporary marriage initials. The tongs are in excellent condition and are clearly marked with the maker's mark and sterling mark.  Measures: Length 5.25 inches, 13.13cm.

    Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps.
