Doulton Lambeth Four Seasons Medallion Jug by Clara Baker 1884

About the Item

An unusual Doulton Lambeth jug decorated with figural medallions depicting the four seasons by Clara Baker and dated 1884. The stoneware jug is of rounded bulbous form standing on a narrow round foot, a pinched neck and wide rim with pouring spout. A simple handle is applied to the side. The jug is applied with four small relief molded medallion roundels surrounded by small flower heads and adjoined by fern sprigs tied with ribbons. The medallions depict Spring as a baby and Winter as an elderly bearded gentleman showing the figures getting increasingly older with the seasons. Each bears the title of the season. The medallions are decorated in pale blue glazes with brown and white decoration applied to decorative elements and set against a brown salt glazed ground. The jug has impressed marks to the base along with various artist marks and is also dated 1884. In good condition.
