Large Georgian Mason's Ironstone Jug or Pitcher Basket Japan Pattern, Ca 1818

About the Item

This is a very good, early and very large Mason's Ironstone Hydra jug or pitcher in the Basket Japan pattern, made in the English, late Georgian period, circa 1813-1820. This jug is particularly decorative, being a much larger size than we normally see and harder to find in this size. The jug has the octagonal "hydra" shape with a notched snake handle and is decorated in the distinctive "Basket Japan" pattern, which is one of Mason's well known chinoiserie patterns, using bold hand painted enamels of cobalt blue, green and burnt orange all in various shades and possibly over a light printed outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 103 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-circa 1848" as published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. This jug is fully marked to the base with one of Mason's earliest recorded impressed marks stating " Masons Patent Ironstone China" in two lines, together with the large crown and wide spaced M A S O N S blue printed mark. These marks signify a very early piece dating to within the first 5 years of Mason's Ironstone production which only started in 1813. This piece also has the free flowing hand painted style only seen on the early pieces. Please note: The smaller jug shown in the final image is NOT included in this sale . It is shown for size comparison purposes and is available separately. Overall a large, very decorative and useful Georgian piece and with no damage.
