Large Mahogany Lazy Susan

About the Item

This two tier Lazy Susan is made of mahogany with a diameter of 533 mm (21 inches), and standing 470 mm (18.5 inches) high, resting on a nicely turned, stepped base. It is quite heavy, weighing in at 5.4 kgs (just under 12 pounds). A Lazy Susan could also be termed a dumb waiter. The top tier is static and would probably have held a vase of flowers or table decoration, whilst the bottom tier would rotate so that food and drink could be moved from one side of the table to the other without unseemly reaching across the table. Lazy Susans came into their own if the owners of the house required an intimate meal or tea time without staff being privy to their conversations. Also as the nineteenth century progressed, less and less servants were used, so in a way this is a labour saving device. This Lazy Susan has retained its original patina and is in very good condition. It would date from around 1880.
