Heavy Antique French Copper Turbotiere Poacher, Maison Gaillard Paris, c.1850
Located in Dallas, TX
This heavy tin-lined French copper fish poacher, known as a turbotiere, dates to circa 1850 and was produced by the well-known factory for kitchen equipment, Maison Gaillard Paris. The turbot is a flatfish found in the Atlantic Ocean and this diamond-shaped poacher was designed to accommodate the shape of the fish, hence the name turbotiere. There is a production mark beneath the rolled rim which reads “Gaillard Maison”. A second production mark (“70”) can be seen beneath one of the large looping handles that are affixed by brass mounts with three rivets. The rivets combined with the dovetail seam on the bottom of the poacher attest to the age of production, as these were methods to assemble copper pieces prior to the late-19th century. Copper serving pieces are always in high demand, making our turbotiere poacher from Gaillard Paris a must have for a kitchen decorative...

It measures 14'' in length by 10 1/2'' in width by 1 1/8'' in height, weighs 29.9 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks and engraved inscriptions as shown. Bailey & Kitchen, as it was originally known, was founded in Philadelphia in 1832, by Joseph Trowbridge Bailey (1806-1854) and Andrew B. Kitchen (died 1850). The partnership was dissolved in November 1846. It was reformed with new partners as Bailey & Co. in 1841, and on March 1, 1878, again re-established as Bailey Banks & Biddle. 1851 Imperial Vienna Porcelain 27 piece Service for 18, very rare
Located in San Francisco, CA
This extremely rare partial set of dinner service was produced at the Royal Vienna Factory in 1851 under the direction of Baron Leithner, ten years before the factory closed. During Leithner's direction, the factory and it's artists were still known for their splendid and expensive gilding which is displayed on each of the pieces in this set. I purchased this set in the later 1980s from Butterfield and Butterfield, and was told that it was consigned by the estate of a Austrian woman who brought the dishes over from Vienna. Purported the set was part of a very large set of dishes belonging to the household of the Empress Elizabeth...
