Vieux Paris 'Old Paris' Tea Caddy or Apothocary Jar Painted with Harbor Scene

About the Item

This empire period Old Paris tea caddy, canister or jar from the 1830's is sure to delight. It was likely designed and sold as a tea canister, but a lidded jar can certainly serve many functions. The painted harbor scene is typical of those more commonly encountered on sets of garniture vases of the 1830's. The flat top lid is especially nice as it provides surface for related landscape scene. The body is painted in the round with a harbor scene featuring tall ships, a cliffside home and people in a village. There is wear to the gold trim, which is common, but enough remains for us to fully recognize all seven bands of gold. The form represents a transition from Neoclassical shapes toward late empire and mid Victorian industrial practicality. A fantastic example to help place the changes occurring in the industry as upper middle class consumers globally began demanding services from France.
