Japanese Bizen Pottery Mizusashi with Mottled Glaze and Black Lacquer Lid
About the Item
This elegant water jar for tea ceremony (Mizusashi), from the Okayama prefecture of Japan features striking mottled tones of grey and rust which are the result of charcoal ash staining the pottery during the 8-day wood-kiln firing process.
As one of the main objects in the aesthetic of a Japanese tea ceremony, this particular Mizusashi has a refined shape, with a bulbous lip and a delicate black lacquer lid which adds a striking contrast of finishes. The markings on it's surface are reminiscent of aged patinated bronze.
This contemporary water jar is signed underneath by the artist, Fujiwara Rakuzan (b 1943) and comes with it's original box, also signed.
Mizusashi measures 19cm high (including lid) with an 18cm diameter at the top, and 8.5cm at the base.
The box is 22cm high, 20cm wide, 20cm deep.
All ceramic items purchased from us will require professional packaging to ensure safe transport and arrival in one piece. This has been accounted for in the shipping charge.
