1882 Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver Flask of Victorian Equestrian Riding Scene

About the Item

This acid etched and engraved Tiffany sterling silver flask with full marks for 1882 might be the most fully articulated narrative in Tiffany flask history — and that’s saying a lot, given the talent of chasers and engravers for the firm in this period. Three top-hatted men, one woman in full Victorian dress (and not riding side saddle), four horses, any number of grass tufts, fences, a farm house, stirrups, tack, saddles, greenery, and all articulated onto a proscenium of sorts, with a fully realized curtain and tie backs, as if to suggest the performance or celebration of a day out riding, rather than the ride itself. In very good condition for its age, with a cap that fully closes — some rubbing away of the details on the cap, and some very minor surface scratching, with one horseshoe pitted. This museum quality story flask can be hand delivered. Provenance: a Florida estate, purchased in 2019. The verso is engraved with contemporary monogram FKM and later inscription JEO / 4-15-77, the hinged cover also etched with equestrian implements, marked on base Tiffany & Co Sterling, 2 Gills and numbered 7283-1173. 8 oz 249 g height 6 in. 15.2 cm.

Portman Gallery is pleased to offer this pair of vintage mid-century lamps from Fornasetti in good vintage condition, re-wired for the USA. Shades sold separately. Is there anyone for whom graphic design, Milan, humour and tromp l’oeil combine for more easily than Piero Fornasetti? The house which still produces works of the highest quality is still in operation today. But the nerdiest collectors will appreciate the vintage material which has never been reproduced, in this case these red and black enamel transfer lamps. Please inquire if you’d like the silk string shades. Photos explain condition: small losses. “The disproportion between the objects and the settings where they are placed creates new, surreal atmospheres in which a lamp is as important as a building, a salt shaker is as important as a tower, a tabletop is as important as a piazza...
