Antique French Solid Silver Gilt Rococo Style Inkwell / Stand, Emile Puiforcat

About the Item

We are delighted to offer this magnificent French silver gilt inkstand made circa late 19th/early 20th century by one of the most important Parisian silversmiths: Puiforcat. Puiforcat, founded by Emile and his brother Joseph-Marie Puiforcat, is regarded as one of the most important and legendary silversmithing firms in Europe of the 19th-20th century. (Further information regarding the firm below). Unsurprisingly, this piece of silver gilt art made by such a fine silversmith presents an array of highly desirable and impressive features. The entire solid silver stand is cast and embellished with Rococo (Rocaille) decorations with intricate details, asymmetric elegance and naturalistic flowing motifs of leaves and scrolls. In addition to its artistic charm, behind its aesthetic beauty lies some impressive calculative and geometric designs: the three supporting feet touch the ground as to support the inkwell perfectly whilst maintaining an unassuming and effortless design of the foliate scrolls 'natural' curving and draping onto the ground. Furthermore, the engraved glass inkwell is mounted finely with a screw so that it can be removed/fitted, and the movement is flawlessly smooth yet with a tight fit, giving a reassuring feel. The inkstand is also fully gilt (gold on silver) presenting a further distinguished, regal and majestic appearance, perfectly capturing the decadent style and essence of the Rococo period. Whilst undoubtedly collectable in its own right for lovers of fine European/French silverware, due to the glass liner remaining in good condition, this inkstand may also be practically used in the modern-day to hold some ink for your pens. Hallmarks for Emile Puiforcat (EP), the French silver control Minerva mark along with English import marks for London 1943 by the London Assay Office is present. PUIFORCAT As mentioned briefly above in the introduction, Puiforcat was a silversmithing family dynasty founded by Emile and his brother Joseph-Marie Puiforcat, renowned for making some of the finest French silverware throughout the 19th-20th century, supplying important families including aristocracy and royalty. Later on in the early 20th century, under the control of Jean Elisée Puiforcat, the firm gained further distinguished recognition for its avant-garde style and modern Art Deco-inspired silverware designs. As a result of such high regard and prominence, many important wares, antique and modern have been on display at museums none less than the V&A (London), Louvres (Paris) & Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum (New York). Amongst such institutional and private collectors was Andy Warhol who was a passionate collector of Puiforcat's Art Deco wares. • Antique Victorian Solid Silver Gilt Naturalistic Leaf Spoon Pair, 1842
    By Sebastian Crespel II

We are delighted to offer this fine and exquisite pair of early Victorian solid silver tea spoons made in London 1842 with the maker's mark of Sebastian Crespell. The pair features a highly ornate and desirable 'naturalistic' design with the entirety of the spoon-shaped as a leaf and branch. Intricate engravings on the leaf bowls and the realistic form of the stem/branch indicate a high level of craftsmanship and artistry by the silversmith. Upon close inspection, the asymmetric and naturally flowing design is further apparent and is a delightful touch. Not only are these spoons practical for a wide variety of uses from tea to desserts, but are a modest yet discerning addition to any collection or interior decor for a sophisticated and nature-inspired look. The pair is gilded with a yellowish/lemon hue that has been worn and patinated in a very attractive colour/tone. A full set of English hallmarks are present on the reverse side of the bowl.
