Spongeware Mug
About the Item
This wheel thrown mug with a lovely strap handle is decorated with a rather sophisticated blue spongeware design of a rooster under a tree. It stands 115 mm (4.5 inches) high and has a diameter at the base of 90 mm (3.75 inches). There are a number of tiny nibbles to its edges and there is a stable hairline crack that runs downwards from the rim for about 35 mm (1 3/8ths inches). Possibly English, it would date from around the middle part of the 19th century.
