US Air Corps in Australia Vintage Military Pennant, circa WWII
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a souvenir felt pennant celebrating the servicemen and women of the U.S. Air Corps who were based in Australia and fought alongside members of the Royal Australian Air Force during WWII. The navy pennant features a printed red outline of the Australian continent with the U.S. Air Corps “wings” superimposed on it. Below, the text reads, “Souvenir of U.S. Air Corps in Australia.” At the very bottom of the pennant is the U.S. Air Corps symbol. Framed according to archival standards, this pennant symbolizes the collaborative partnership between the United States and Australia during the height of the Second World War in the Pacific Theater. Following the swift Japanese conquest of the Philippines and East Indies in late 1941, the remaining servicemen of the United States Army Air Force in the Pacific eventually relocated to Australia, to join other US and Australian units, including the Fifth Air Force, and regroup. The Fifth Air Force was placed under the command of Major General George Kenney in July of 1942. Their new goal was to seize air superiority over New Guinea and gain back air coverage over the Solomon Sea. General Kenney worked with U.S. Army General MacArthur...

Vintage WWII U.S. Navy Patriotic Banner, "Welcome Firemen" Flag, circa 1941-1945
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is a beautifully preserved WWII Navy aircraft carrier banner, emblazoned with a welcome for the ship's firemen. The banner is partially printed and has sewn elements. The flag's field is dyed a rich navy blue, with a resist dyed white stripe and a sewn red stripe at both top and bottom. A large "WELCOME" is resist dyed at center, in big white letters. This is followed by a sewn yellow strip of contrasting fabric, printed with the word "FIREMEN" in blue. Thirteen white stars complete the design of this patriotic piece of WWII and Navy history. The banner retains its original white hoist, with two metal grommets on each side, for ease in display on the ship. Along the center of the hoist is the printed name of "J.S. Sullivan." "Naugatuck, Conn." is printed along the left and the size "2 x3 FT" is printed along the right. The flag maker, Annin, has sewn in its label, boasting "guaranteed defiance fast colors." CONDITION: Very good condition, considering age and past use. Partially printed and hand-sewn flag construction. Some toning to the white of the flag and along the top hoist. Original grommets at left and right of the hoist. The flag measures 36" X 22". Expertly framed on black linen with an antiqued black wood...

"Under the Shadow of Their Wings, Our Lands Shall Dwell Secure" WWII Poster
By C. C. Beall
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is an original World War II era poster, produced in circa 1944. The poster was released by General Cable as part of the famous "Fight Talk" series, which promoted the importance of communication, safety, security, and job performance. It was designed by watercolor artist and illustrator Cecil C. Beall. This poster was produced as a tribute to the Air Force soldiers on the front lines during WWII. The poster shows wounded, yet good spirited, bomber crewmen giving an "OK" hand gesture. They stand in front of a background of landing and shot-up B25s. White block text at the bottom of the poster reads, "Under The Shadow Of Their Wings/Our Land Shall Dwell Secure." The poster served as a reminder to the citizens back home that the servicemen of the Air Force would protect the country from danger. Cecil Calvert (C. C.) Beall (1892–1970) was an American commercial illustrator. He worked in watercolors and illustrations, and produced drawings for magazines and comic books such as the Saturday Evening Post, Vanity Fair and Reader's Digest. Beall also designed posters for the United States government for war loan drives during WWII. One of Beall's most recognizable works is his "Now All Together" 7th Liberty Loan poster, which depicts the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima from Joe Rosenthal...

WWII 48 Star American Flag Made in France or Belgium to Welcome US Troops
Located in York County, PA
WWII American Flag With An Elongated Profile, A Sky Blue Canton, And 48 Six-pointed Stars With Star-of-david Profiles; Probably Made In France Or Belgium To Welcome U.s. Troops Following Liberation From The Germans, circa 1944, An Exceptional Example This extraordinary American flag, with rare symbolism and wonderful graphic qualities, is indicative of examples produced in make-do fashion by the private citizens of Europe. Displayed with great emotion to welcome of Allied Forces following liberation from the Nazi Germany, the flag was probably made in France or Belgium, though found in Germany itself. The most standout feature are the 48 six-pointed stars, with Star-of-David profiles, on a beautiful sky blue canton. The flag’s blood red, burgundy stripes provide great contrast, while inconsistent fading along the top and adjacent to the fly end complete the weathered and well-loved image that is as akin to modern art as can be found in vintage flags of the Second World War. Elongated in shape and with the hoist end turned over and hemmed to form an open sleeve, this is a single-sided banner, lined on the reverse. Like other European-made Stars & Stripes I have encountered from WWI and WWII, the fabrics were selected from whatever could be salvaged during the scarcity of war. The white lining is sturdy, plain weave cotton, probably a bed sheet. The stars are of a similar fabric, but the white used to construct the stripes has more of an open weave, similar to cheesecloth, though not quite as thin. The red is lightweight, plain weave cotton. The canton is cotton as well, but very different, probably a blended fabric with synthetic content. This has an almost ribbed weave, closer to grosgrain in its appearance. The canton was pieced vertically, likely because it what little blue fabric there was of it to complete the task at hand, and it was pieced horizontally along the very top, almost certainly because the canton was made too small initially and had to be extended to fit properly into the striped field. The entire flag was sewn by machine, probably of a treadle-operated variety, given the probability of the lack of electricity during wartime. Use of the Star of David helps date the flags to WWII specifically (U.S. involvement 1941-45). Both the religious and historical significance magnify the importance. Use of a 6-pointed star or "Shield of David / Magen David" is certainly poignant in a WWII flag...

"You Can't Afford to Miss Either" Vintage WWII Bonds Poster, 1944
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Dated 1944, this vintage WWII poster encourages the purchase of War Bonds. The poster depicts a machine gunner in action, fighting in the Pacific theater. His hands clutch a machine gun while a targeted Japanese Zero falls in flames behind him. The poster reads “YOU can’t afford to miss EITHER” at the top of the image, further urging the American populace to “BUY BONDS EVERY PAYDAY” at the bottom of the poster. This poster was an official U.S. Treasury Department poster, illustrated by Martha Sawyers and printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office in 1944. The war ushered in the biggest advertising Campaign to date, critical to the wartime communication needs of every combatant: from raising money, recruiting soldiers and boosting volunteer efforts, to spurring production and provoking outrage at enemy atrocities. The most common themes found in the posters were the consequences of careless talk, anti-German and Japanese propaganda...
