Tony Gum - Cheese I
About the Item
Forming part of the artist’s ground-breaking 2016 Milked In Africa series, Tony Gum’s featured portraits negotiate and interrogate the historical and ongoing commodification of Africa’s people, culture and natural resources. Utilising dairy products as a symbol of the continent’s abundance and the artist’s own entry into motherhood, Gum vividly portrays the transformation of milk into a commodified product like cheese and the subsequent conversion of milk into ‘money bags’.
This depiction exposes the West’s exploitation of Africa’s cultural heritage often without due respect or true understanding of their origins. Here, Gum recognises the societal implications of an ever- evolving world, particularly in the context of social media. Through her work, she consistently sheds light on the principles that underpin various value systems, transcending cultural boundaries. Even traditions that may appear outdated to some gain renewed significance in our contemporary era.
