Asafo Banner
About the Item
This is a very rare example of an Asafo Banner from the Fante people of the Cape Coast of Ghana . The Asafo have been a highly militarised society long before the Europeans set foot in West Africa. They consist of 20 or so regiment put in place as local militia to protect each region of the Cape Coast . Each regiment has its own Flag and in turn each Asafo Officer or 'Supi' has his own flag . This piece is not a Flag but a Regimental Banner which would be draped around the Asafo Shrine at ceremonial occassions such as the initiation of new recruits. The piece itself is in very good condition and will date from the early 1940's. Very decorative aswell as collectable.
