Fine Early Twentieth-Century Figurative Flutes

About the Item

Together, these two finely carved flutes display a wonderful interplay of the abstracted forms of a 'male' and 'female' figure. A strip of snake skin has been wrapped around the 'body' of the 'male' figurative flute, located to the left in the supplied photographs. On the right, a series of carved rings feature on the 'neck' of the 'female' flute. The surface of both instruments exhibits a deep, worn shiny patina. These flutes, from the Bamileke culture in Cameroon, would have been played during ceremonies by musicians and traditional hunters. Having been in separate private European collections, the two flutes are 'united' and now sold as a pair.
