Flavio Poli for Seguso Vetri d'Arte Bell Pendant from Hotel Bristol Merano

About the Item

Original iridescent opaque white Murano glass bell-form campagna pendant light commissioned by Aldo Bennati, a Genoese shipping industrialist and owner of the Hotel Bauer in Venice for the 1954 reopening of the famous Grand Hotel Bristol di Merano. It was designed by Flavio Poli (1900-1984) and produced by Seguso Vetri d'Arte, where he was artistic director from 1937-1963. The bell is 12 inches diameter at its widest; 11 inches high; 13.5 inches high inclusive of the glass petaled ornament on top of the bell; alas, this does not have its original iridescent white Murano glass ceiling canopy cup which was 4 inches diameter and 3.5 inches high. This listing is for the big white bell, the petaled finial and the internal lighting element. Chain not included. Takes a single standard Edison screw bulb up to 100 watts. Re: the Grand Hotel Bristol di Merano: Under the direction of Marino Meo, the fashionable architect who had redesigned the Bauer, the Bristol Hotel was erected and inaugurated majestically (with Sophia Loren in attendance) in 1954. Featuring a rooftop pool, air conditioning and a television in every room, the hotel was also furnished with great taste: Persian rugs, marble bathrooms, high quality fabrics, Murano light fixtures for the hotel were provided by Seguso, Cenedese and SALIR, including designs by Flavio Poli, Archimede Seguso, Alfredo Barbini among others. and furniture especially designed by Gio Ponti, Paolo Buffa and Melchiorre Bega. Closed in 1993, the Bristol hotel remained empty for a decade before its destruction was finally ordered in 2007. These lamps were purchased at the famous auction in 2010 when all the glorious contents of the Hotel Bristol were sold. Special thanks to the kindness of Mrs Francesca Bortolotto Possati, CEO of the Bauer Hotel group in Venice, and granddaughter of Arnaldo Bennati.

The Bristol hotel, Meran (1954-2006): The hotel’s grandiose design was the dream of an extremely wealthy shipbuilder, Arnaldo Bennati (whose family still to this day owns the Bauer Hotel in Venice). The architecture and interior design that Bennati commissioned caused an immediate sensation. The international press reported in detail on its splendor and deemed it the most modern and elegant hotel in Europe. Under the direction of architect Marino Meo...
