About the Item

Amazing and skillfully made, Dutch Amsterdamse School wrought iron pendant light. Michel de Klerk (1884-1924) is considered the most important architect and designer of the Dutch Amsterdam School era. His designs were and still are among the most out-standing ever created and because of this he could only to work with the best in the business. Simply, because sometimes even the most skilled of artisans could not create in real life what De Klerk had created on paper. Among other buildings De Klerk designed 'Het Schip', the world-famous 'workers palace' on the Spaarndammerplantsoen in Amsterdam (which today also houses a museum). De Klerk also contributed to 'het Scheepvaarthuis', another Dutch building and marvel of the Dutch Arts and Crafts era which today houses Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam. This artistic, aesthetically amazing and borderline futuristic wrought iron chandelier by De Klerk is one of the truly rare (and therefor also important) items that you will ever be able to purchase. In our images you can actually see two of these chandeliers in the building for which they were initially created. We considered it a minor miracle that we were able to prove its provenance via the photos we found in a book. We have often been blessed with this type of 'minor miracles', as if they were always meant to happen the way they did. Outstandingly executed by Winkelman & van der Bijl (another great name from the Dutch Arts & Crafts era) this wrought iron chandelier both design and makers-wise truly is a masterpiece. It must have taken one or several highly skilled and seasoned blacksmiths an incredible amount of time to hand-forge and put together all the individual pieces that make up this antique European work of lighting art.
