Angelo Lelii for Arredoluce Extendable Height Floor Lamp in Brass, Red Lacquer

About the Item

Angelo Lelii (1911-1979) An elegant, adjustable floor lamp by Angelo Lelii (sometimes spelled Angelo Lelli), for his pioneering lighting firm Arredoluce. A graceful tripartite base curves two polished brass forelegs around a black-lacquered iron stem with a serpentine arched foot. The elongated base supports an extendible telescope neck in polished brass — ranging from 55" to 71" — which bows into a moveable, bell-shaped shade lacquered in cherry red. This allows the light beam to be directed with precision. With its distinctive cloche, flexible neck, coquettish curves, and extra-slim proportions, this minimalist and versatile lamp alternately calls to mind Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and a graceful, long-bodied praying mantis. As with Lelii's most sensitive work, the design is at once highly practical — note both the extendible height and omnidirectional light, equally amenable to differently sized spaces, as well the small footprint — and poetic. Italy, 1951. Rewired for use in the US. Measures: Maximum height 71" Minimum height 55". Presented with one of a pair of Italian 1950's reclining armchairs, also available at our gallery.

  • Tom Dixon, Early Pair of Kinetic Gold Leaf Spiral Floor Lamps, UK 1988
    By Tom Dixon
    Located in New York, NY
Tom Dixon (b. 1959) An early, highly spirited pair of spiral floor lamps by designer Tom Dixon OBE, in spun steel covered in hand-applied gold leaf. Undulating coils rising out of gilt domed bases that each cradle a hidden bulb, these interactive, sculptural works are intentionally pliable. They’re designed to glimmer and, if desired, sway, projecting helix-like shadows that dance on the ceiling: a choreography of light. "I got interested in making lights active rather than static," Dixon said of this pivotal work. "It’s hard to pass this lamp without smacking it to make the light dance. This was my first real lamp and sparked an enduring passion for lighting objects." Inspired by the kinetic sculpture and shadow-play of artists like Alexander Calder, Jean Tinguely, and Ruth Asawa, this raw and buoyant pair of lights is animated by Dixon's ongoing focus on materiality, manufacturing, and form. At the nexus of his early experiments welding found objects into salvage furniture...
