Vintage Mante Religieuse Floor Lamp by Rispal
About the Item
Mante Religieuse (praying mantis) floor lamp designed and produced by Jean Rispal in the 1950s, made of wood and a hanging cellulose acetate lampshade.
The lighting manufacturer RISPAL was a French lighting brand based in Paris and active from the mid 1920’s to 1982.
RISPAL productions were very varied and used materials such as, wood, glass, brass, crystal and wrought iron.
During the 1950’s, the house launched a line of lighting models called “Formes Nouvelles”, which took inspiration from Scandinavian lines as well as from nature and artists such as: Alexander Calder, and Hans Arp.
The materials used for this line were wood and opalines as well as Rhodoïd, for the creation of the lamp shades, which are to this day very rare to find.
Perhaps the most iconic model of the house, is the Praying Mantis, a model that takes its inspiration from the elegant lines of the insect, making the piece a lighting sculpture.

- La Mante Religieuse Floor Lamp by RispalBy RispalLocated in Brooklyn, NYDouglas Mont, a lighting designer, Rispal collector, and true enthusiast of the brand, wanted to revive those emblematic creations of the golden age of French furniture. Years of research, meetings, and experiments eventually convinced him to re-launch the iconic brand. It seemed almost impossible to reproduce these lamps without the original plans or tools. The “Praying Mantis” lampshade is a good example: the technique used to produce the cellulose acetate lampshade, which was the emblematic piece of the brand, had to be completely reinvented. If there is one model that represents the avant-gardism of Rispal alone, it is undoubtedly the “praying man- tis.” Its surname comes from its organic design and striking similarity to the insect It was given over time by antique dealers and decorators despite the fact that Rispal products did not have names, only references. The “praying mantis” is often attributed to a certain Jean Rispal, though the reality is, Rispal lamps...Category
