18th Century Italian Baroque Parcel-Gilt Ochre Painted One-Light Wall Sconce

About the Item

An Italian Baroque wooden carved parcel-gilt and ochre painted one-light wall sconce from the first half of the 18th century. The beautifully shaped and pierced backplate presents a central medallion framed by elaborate symmetrical foliate scrolls and topped by acanthus leaves, below a scrolled crest centered by a spray of acanthus leaves. A foliate S-scrolled arm emerges from the foliate base, ending with a large bobèche supporting the candle. The Baroque style of this Italian one-light wall sconce, with its highly decorative curves and counter curves and profuse ornamentation, will introduce eccentricity and charm to any interior space. The sconce is unwired.
