20th Century Italian Modern Pair of Vintage Opaline Glass Wall Lamps by Stilnovo

About the Item

A vintage Mid-Century modern Italian pair of wall lamps, lights made of hand crafted polished brass designed and produced by Stilnovo, in good condition. Each of the detailed appliques, sconces are particularized by three frosted opaline glass shades which are sitting in an iron frame, halted by short brass arms. The wires have been renewed. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1940 - 1950, Milan, Italy. Shade: 5" diameter Stilnovo was an Italian lighting and design company founded in 1946, in Milan by the well-known Italian designer Bruno Gatta. During the Mid-Century Modern era the Stilnovo brand was one of the most pioneered lighting design companies in Italy, also known as the Stilnovo Period. Well-known artists have worked and designed for Stilnovo, such as the Italian architect and designer Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and Joe Cesare Colombo, etc. To this day, the Stilnovo brand is still a benchmark in the Italian lighting history.

    Pair of midcentury wall sconces made of a brass backplate and holder and a rectangular opaline glass diffuser. Original stamp of the manufacturer on the bases. Stilnovo Stilnovo is a prestigious Italian lighting manufacturer Founded in 1946 in Milan by Bruno Gatta, the company participated in the 1947, 1951 Milan Triennale and in 1954 won its first Compasso D'Oro with its 2061 arm suspension. Renowned designers Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni added spectacular new lamps, and expanded Stilnovo to international markets. The 1960s saw the birth of many new projects, including the Torre Galfa in Milan, designed by the architect Melchiorre Bega. A new collaboration enriches the Stilnovo offer: Luigi Gorgoni and his Buonanotte lamp, considered a design icon. 1968 marks the revival of the brand, with designers such as: Joe Colombo, Angelo Mangiarotti, Ettore Sottsass, Marcello Pietrantoni, Roberto Lucci, Danilo and Corrado Aroldi designing for Stilnovo. From the 1970s, the brand developed throughout the world, won prestigious design prizes and took part in numerous exhibitions in the most important museums of the world.
