French Tole Late 19th to Early 20th Carcel Lamp from the Estate of Bunny Mellon
About the Item
This fine old lamp made of tin, gilded brass and cast bronze would have had a burner at one point but now has been converted to electricity It comes from the estate of Paul and Bunny Mellon and once formed part of the decorative elements in their home Oak Springs Farms in Charlottesville Va.
The design is that of a slender vertical urn with lion-head handles that issue from acanthus leaves. The urn rests on a ribbed lower body that is set on a stepped cylindrical base mounted with a brass or bronze CAP and a cast-decorated collar at the bottom above a slab base.
The surface is original with some lifting and flaking to the paint and the gilding on the cast brass or bronze elements is rubbed thru while the flat surfaces but the parts are clean and polished.
