Pair of 19th Century French Porcelain Bronze and Cut Glass Oil Lamps from Gien

About the Item

Elegant pair of antique oil lamps made into table lights from Gien, France, crafted circa 1880, the tall "lampes a petrole", sit on square bronze bases. Each colorful porcelain light fixture is hand painted with traditional Gien Renaissance decor, with mythological figures and floral garlands, and is further embellished at the top by the original cut-glass oil container. Both pieces are in excellent condition with new wiring, adjustable brass stem, and a rich painted finish in the white, yellow and blue palette. Shades not included. Place these oil lamps on your dining room server or as bedside tables fixtures. The Faïencerie de Gien is a faience (or earthenware) factory in Gien, France. It was founded in 1821 by Thomas Edme Hulm. Amongst the many faience manufacturers in the 19th century, the reputation of the Gien manufacturers is equal to those of the factories of Creil-Monterau, Longwy, Sarreguemines or Bordeaux. At first Hulm aimed at producing crockery; later he started producing dinner services, decorative pieces and dinner services embellished with family arms. The production of oil lamps was another typical specialty of Gien. Dimensions: 7" diameter, 34" height.

    This round and colorful antique planter was created in “Faïencerie de Gien," France, circa 1890. The large porcelain flower pot has intertwined snake handles, and features traditional Greek style motifs throughout. The sculptural, ceramic vase is decorated with hand painted traditional allegory motifs, including the Horn of plenty and lambrequin mantling decor. The elegant porcelain piece is in excellent condition with rich painted colors in the blue, white and yellow palette inside and out. Stamped Gien France underfoot for further authentication.
