Superb Bronze Lamp in Chinese Manner, Mid-Century

About the Item

Demonstrating the artist's mastery of bronze casting and layered, complex patinas, this rare bronze lamp base is a superb example of mid-century chinoiserie. A current Christie's decorative arts catalogue shows this bronze being used as a table base by Philip and Kelvin Laverne, although it is not clear whether they sculpted the bronze or simply made creative use of a bronze by another maker. Walnut was used for the lamp base and cap, and the patinas emphasize a mossy green hue with touches of spring green here and there.
