Pair of Late 19th Century Very Large English Oak Reformed Gothic Mirrors

About the Item

This pair of mirrors crafted in England circa 1870 have been fully restored with a completely new surface and structurally supported as the mirror plate is very thick and heavy. Made at a time of renewed interest in Medieval and Gothic artist guilds and with similar ideals as the PreRaphaelite movements in art. These would have been considered very Avant guard for the day. Made in a modified Gothic arch the sides are decorated with simple robust columns turned from walnut that are inlaid with bold bands of oak set with ebony dots. The top stretcher and base are likewise decorated with these same elements of dots set into walnut or oak sections of decorative raised panels or notched carved areas. The design and work is bold and simple seemingly very modern and forward-thinking for such a period. The choices of materials oak, walnut and ebony are unusual as well and set these apart as custom-made for a specific interior design project of the period. Acquired in England and amassed with other like furniture, art, and decorative goods to decorate the Manhattan and Greenwich Connecticut homes of Winestein Company and Miramax Founders. • Oak 19th Century Gothic Revival English Marble Topped Centre or Library Table
    Located in Hudson, NY
This finely made table in the Gothic Revival taste comes from England, circa 1875. All things Gothic have had a steady love affair by the English and have enjoyed several revival periods. The best was in the second and third quarters of the 19th century which is when this table was made. Constructed of walnut the table is designed to feel monumental without being of that scale. Set on four Quatrefoil column legs that rise to a shaped pierced arch that is centered on each side by a shield. The finish is old and excellent in color and sheen. The marble top is shaped with rounded corners has a simple ogee edge and is a nice soft green. The profile of the table allows it to be used as a freestanding library...
