Antique 19th-century elegant silver leaf gilt French Louis Philippe mirror
About the Item
On offer here is an elegant and authentic antique mirror that was made in northern France in the late 1800s, circa 1890. The mirror frame features the upper rounded corners typical for Louis Philippe mirrors. The frame has a solid pine base, smoothened with gesso with a black undercoat finish. The whole mirror frame was silver leaf gilt and polished to obtain a soft metallic shine. Throughout the years the silver leaf has slightly faded now revealing the dark undercoat.
The mirror glass is authentic to the mirror and is a silver nitrate silvered glass plate. The mirror glass has a few spots and superficial scratches. Also, it shows subtle brush marks in the mirror glass. These are a chemical reaction to the paint that was used to protect and cover the silver nitrate silvering at the back. The glass matches the mirror frame beautifully and has a great antique appearance as a whole together with the mirror frame.
The glass plate was removed from the frame and the whole piece was gently cleaned. A new period pine back cladding that protects the glass was added. The mirror is clean, solid, without damage, and ready for use.
