About the Item

This beautiful antique gold leaf gilt oval mirror was made in southern France in the late 19th century. The top ornament is centered upon an acanthus pediment flanked by C-scrolls, acanthus, and floral elements. The lower ornament has the same design elements and is smaller in size. The most elevated part of the frame has an elegant gadrooned profile and the glass is surrounded by a pearl beading. The frame is completely gold leaf gilt. Some parts are polished to a higher degree than others. The most polished parts show the red bole undercoat that gives the gold a warmer appearance. The whole frame is patinated to achieve more depth in the color. The mirror has its original thick facetted glass with silver nitrate silvering. The mirror plate is beautifully distressed with a fine cracked appearance. The mirror plate was removed from the frame and the whole mirror was gently cleaned. The mirror has a very strong gold color with great gloss and without damage. Great piece.

Replacements made: A new period pine protective back cladding was added to protect the glass. Repaired: Small repairs to the top ornaments were done in our atelier. Wear consistent with age and use. The mirror is clean, solid and highly authentic without damage. Ready for use.
