Monumental Antique French Silver Leaf Gilded Mirror with Console Table

About the Item

This beautiful mirror and console table are partially silver leaf gilt and also show the bone color of the gesso. It features rich carved ornaments around the frame and table, such as bay leaf, scallops, acanthus, and flowers. The console table features a stone top in Rojo Alicante red marble. On both left and right lower sides, there are zinc planters located. This ensemble was made in northern France, in the Alsace Lorraine region in circa 1850. This mirror and table were original of “gold” color. Its golden appearance was made by the use of gold paint (gold dust mixed with clear varnish) and silver leaf gilding with a yellow patina over it. The use of yellow patina made the silver look gold. The yellow patina has been washed off to reveal the silver and bone colors that combine beautifully. The pureness of the materials and the patina that remains make this a truly rare piece. The mirror plates are silver nitrate silvered and are original to the piece. Condition details: The mirror and table were cleaned in our atelier, both from the inside and outside. Over a hundred years of dust was removed. The upper crest has minor damages that were repaired. The glass has the typical mist and some marks, but matches perfectly with the frame and shows no awkward spots. The glass was reinserted and the back cladding reattached. The ensemble is without damage and ready for use.

Condition:

Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. The yellow wax that made the silver appear gold, was in bad condition and was removed. The gold paint was highly oxidated and damaged and was gently removed as well. Small repairs to the ornaments were carried out to ensure a solid piece.
