Spanish Louis XIV Style Mirror

About the Item

Heavily influenced by his grandfather, Louis XIV, and his Italian wife, Elizabeth Farnese, Philip V of Spain spent exorbitant sums on commissioned Parisian furniture. This mirror, though made much later, is inspired by those elegant pieces. The ornate decorations introduced in the 18th century can be seen in the beautiful C-scrolls and scalloped shell patterns that surmount the beaded rectangular frame. The piece features a beautifully aged patina. The wood appears to be an exotic -palisander, on of the many terms for rosewood. The likely origin for the wood is Indonesia. The color of the wood and its great smoothness is its most appealing feature. It has been finished in genuine French polish, a natural shellac-based finish that is one of the few "old" finishes still in widespread use today. Layers of shellac are applied with a buffing pad and gently built up. The result is a rich finish that doesn't look overly shiny or new.
