18th Century French Copper and Brass Braisier or Serving Piece

About the Item

This rare eighteenth century copper and brass braisier hails from the city of Villedieu-les-Poeles, the French capital of copper artisans in Normandy, France. It boasts ornately worked cut-out sides, hand riveted legs, and a hand-turned wooden handle. This piece was originally filled with hot coals and was used for braising or for keeping dishes warm when they were placed upon the three extensions above the hot coals. Its brass bottom in a rose window pattern is pierced to allow ashes to pass through. A fine two hundred year old piece of art that can still function as a braisier or as a decorative piece to support a candle or a serving dish.
